Carrier-sense protocols for packet-switched smart antenna basestations

چکیده
Smart antennas can be used to improve the performance of various wireless communication systems. Recently researchers have considered their use in wireless packet-switched networks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. In 6], a single-beam system was described which employs a smart antenna basestation operating in carrier-sense (CSMA) mode. Performance improvements can be obtained since the antenna can dynamically point pattern nulls in the direction of interfering stations. This reduces the chance of channel collisions amongst competing and hidden stations. In this paper we consider the reverse link throughput and capacity achieved by a set of portable stations sharing a single indoor radio channel. The stations communicate to a basesta-tion which is equipped with a smart antenna operating in multibeam SDMA mode. To accommodate this, the basestation contains several beamforming modules, each of which is capable of directing a beam at a desired packet transmission. A basic multibeam CSMA protocol is rst described for this type of system. Stations access the channel using a form of CSMA which has been adapted to accommodate the smart antenna basestation. Wireless networks often have very poor inter-station connectivity due to channel fading and shadowing eeects. For this reason, successfully initiated packet transmissions may be corrupted by hidden station transmissions 6]. In this paper we also present a multibeam CSMA/SDMA protocol which incorporates basestation/portable signalling to reduce this eeect. The protocol is motivated by the RTS/CTS packet exchanges used in IEEE 802.11 for this purpose 7]. In the paper we present throughput and capacity models for the systems being considered.

Does Downlink Nulling Make Sense for Combined Packet/circuit Switched Wireless Systems?
Downlink beamforming is the limiting factor in the application of adaptive antennas in cellular mobile communication systems. Directing nulls of the antenna pattern to active mobiles in the downlink will be impractical in the case of packet data transmission. But in the evolution of 2 generation mobile communication systems packet switched data transmission (e.g. GPRS/EGPRS in GSM Phase 2+) and...

It is shown that FRESH (frequency-shift) filtering prior to Viterbi demodulation in GSM basestations and/or handsets can multiply the number of cochannel signals that can be separated with M antennas by (2M-1)/(M-1): suppression of 1 interferer with one antenna, 3 interferers with a diversity antenna pair, and 2M1 interferers with M antennas. The network-level simulations reported in this paper...

Directional distributed co-ordination function (D-DCF), a modified medium access control protocol of IEEE 802.11, is proposed to support hybrid antennas such as smart adaptive array antennas and normal omni-directional antennas, in one wireless local area network cell. Nodes equipped with smart antennas follow D-DCF and nodes equipped with normal antennas follow DCF. D-DCF based on a hybrid vir...

Recently, there has been increased interest in moving the RF electronics in basestations from the bottom of the tower to the top, yielding improved power efficiencies and reductions in infrastructural costs. Tower-top systems have faced resistance in the past due to such issues as increased weight, size, and poor potential reliability. However, modern advances in reducing the size and complexit...
